Untitled DocumentBOSTON — Converted Organics Inc. has entered into a strategic agreement with Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), one of the largest agricultural processors in the world, to develop lysine-rich, green organic-based liquid and solid fertilizers for use in the professional turfgrass market.
Under the agreement Converted Organics will have access to ADM's patent-pending, lysine-based technology, marketed under the NaturStim trade name, and be allowed to develop, produce and market the Turf Blend organic liquid and granular fertilizers that contain NaturStim products. The NaturStim product line features the lysine-based technology that provides a water soluble source of organic nitrogen. Converted Organics will be in position to become a major distribution channel for the ADM NaturStim product-line to the U.S. professional turfgrass market via the Turf Blend products, all of which will bear the NaturStim logo.
"The unique characteristics of Converted Organics' liquid and solid Turf Blend(TM) fertilizers are attributable to our proprietary High Temperature Liquid Composting (HTLC) manufacturing process, as well as the high quality of ADM's NaturStim," said William A. Torello, Ph.D., Director of Product Research and Development for Converted Organics. "Liquid Turf Blend, which Converted Organics started taking orders for in July, is the first completely soluble, high-nitrogen, organic liquid fertilizer for use as the sole source of nitrogen in any turfgrass management plan. Granular Turf Blend, which will be available next spring, has a low carbon-nitrogen ratio, allowing for quick breakdown and response after application. This organic granular fertilizer will have a quick-release, water-soluble, lysine nitrogen source; a blend of slow release insoluble nitrogen; and it will also incorporate documented disease suppression characteristics — a one-two punch, followed by a knockout punch. No other organic granular product will offer this fertility combination."
Converted Organics uses its HTLC manufacturing process to digest NaturStim into the company's primary food-based Liquid Concentrate 1-1-1 organic fertilizer, creating the Turf Blend products. The HTLC manufacturing process was created to recycle food waste into high-quality organic soil amendment and fertilizer products through a closed-loop, environmentally sustainable system.
About Converted Organics Inc.
Converted Organics, Inc., based in Boston, produces all-natural, organic soil amendment or fertilizer products through food waste recycling. The company plans to sell and distribute its environmentally-friendly fertilizer products in the retail, turf management, and agribusiness markets.
Converted Organics' fertilizer products will be produced in both a dry pellet and liquid concentrate. Its products have been tested in field trials for more than a dozen crops with the result that, on average, the net value of the farmer's crop increased 11-16%, depending on the particular crop and product application. This is due, in part, to the disease suppression characteristics of the product, which reduce or eliminate the need for other crop protection applications. Increased use of nitrogen in commercial agriculture and turf grass applications, such as golf courses, has reduced the soil's ability to absorb nitrogen and other nutrients. Using the products produced by Converted Organics helps restore the soil by replenishing these micronutrients. This reduces the amount of nitrogen required in a virtuous cycle that benefits from long-term use. As a result, use of the product will reduce chemical run-off to streams, ponds and rivers, an objective with significant long-term benefits to the environment.
The products have a long shelf life compared to many other organic fertilizers. In a number of lab and field trials, the liquid product has been shown to be effective in mitigating powdery mildew, a leaf fungus that effects most plants and grasses and restricts the flow of water and nutrients to the plant. The Company's fertilizer products can be used on a stand-alone basis or in combination with more traditional fertilizers and crop protection products. Converted Organics expects to benefit from increased regulatory focus on organic waste processing and on environmentally friendly growing practice
