ROCHESTER, NY – The Empire State Green Industry Show will be held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center Jan. 12 - 14, 2010. Featured speakers include Dr. George Hudler, Chair, Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University and Gregory Hoover, Ornamental Extension Entomologist with Pennsylvania State University. Together, they will present four comprehensive presentations on plant diseases and insect damage. They'll also review diagnostic principals for infectious and non-infectious agents and arthropod pests on woody plants.
The show, hosted by the New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA), New York State Nursery and Landscape Association (NYSNLA), and New York State Arborists – ISA Chapter, Inc. (NYSA), will offer a variety of topics on lawn care presented by top industry educators and professionals. These include Cornell University professors, Dr. Frank Rossi and Dr. Marty Petrovic, who will present research updates and give presentations on turf fertility and the importance of soil testing. In addition, Dr. Jennifer Grant will present IPM elements for lawns. Aquatics sessions on pond management are slated for Thursday, Jan. 14, where management approaches to common weeds will be discussed. The Empire State Green Industry Show includes accredited education sessions offering pesticide recertification credits for New York (NYSDEC), Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont as well as the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) and Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional (CNLP). In addition, continuing education units will be available from the Sports Turf Manager Association (STMA), and Snow and Ice Management Association (SIMA) for Certified Snow Professionals. Dr. Daniel Peck, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Soil Insect Ecology and Turfgrass Entomology at Cornell University's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva will present an insect diagnostic workshop made possible by a grant from the Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Fund. This hands-on lab will provide practice for participants to examine and differentiate common turf insect pests.
For those unable to attend day classes or who would like to earn extra credits, “Pesticide CSI” will be presented on Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. During this evening session, our Cornell University experts will be “investigating” environmental issues associated with turf pesticide use and the assessment tools used to determine environmental impact. In addition, highlights from the 2009 Monroe County Lawn Care Initiative will be presented by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The popular round table luncheon discussions will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Registered participants will be given the opportunity to meet with expert facilitators, have lunch, and exchange ideas with colleagues.
